I know, I know…if you’re a “non-runner,” I’m sure you read that title and uttered or thought something along the lines of, “Psh, don’t think so.” I get it. I wouldn’t classify myself as a “runner.” I like to get out and move, not just because it’s healthy, is a great way to de-stress and keeps me looking decent in skinny jeans (shameless, I know), but because I can. And because I can, I can also give back without really giving anything except my effort.
Have you heard of Charity Miles? It’s a free app for Android and iPhone users that tracks the miles you run, walk or bike, and through corporate donations, donates money to the charity of your choice. Bikers earn 10¢ a mile, runners and walkers earn 25¢ per mile. It’s super easy to use – turn on your GPS (GPS has to be enabled for this to work), open the app, select whether you’re biking, running or walking, swipe through the list of available charities, select the charity of choice and then select start. Go back to the app when you’re workout is complete press finish, and bam, you’ve earned money for charity! Select from any of the following:
- Feeding America
- Autism Speaks
- Wounded Warrior Project
- The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
- Stand Up To Cancer
- RED to Benefit The Global Fund
- World Food Programme
- The Nature Conservancy
- Habitat for Humanity
- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
- Partnership for a Healthier America
- Pencils of Promise
- Girl Up
- Shot at Life
- Ironman Foundation
- Every Mother Counts
- Achilles International
So many great charities to choose from! I typically run for Stand Up To Cancer and occasionally have chosen the ASPCA. I’ve noticed for the ASPCA, instead of a dollar amount at the end, it tells me how many puppy and kitten vaccinations my workout has funded. Regardless, I’m convinced that when you can freely give to a good cause, it’s a great thing. Even if you’re not big into running, we all have days when we do a lot of walking – shopping, outdoor markets, vacations, etc. Turn on Charity Miles and give back! This app works great while other apps are running by the way. I use it in conjunction with Zombies, Run! and have not had any problems.
Just to caution you, it’s my understanding this app doesn’t work yet on stationary equipment – treadmills for example.
Also, I was reading some of the reviews of this app before writing this post. Ouch! I cannot believe all of the negative criticism out there for such silly things. Some people complained because their favorite charity isn’t an option. Lots of people complained because they didn’t want to have it post to their Facebook walls. Umm, ok. Don’t. It’s set up to post to Facebook because that is an easy way for them to get the word out. But everyone can change the settings so that it doesn’t post. I know because I rarely post a thing on my Facebook wall and I’ve changed my settings to not post. Trivial, but people just love to complain don’t they? There were also complaints that “it doesn’t work.” I don’t know about that. I do know that for myself and the 10 or more friends and family members that I know use it, it works fine. Each of us have different phones ranging from various Androids to iPhones.
Now that spring has sprung, get out and get moving! Give Charity Miles a try and easily give back to those who need it!
