Kate Mara was gorgeous in a Prada gown at this past weekend’s White House Correspondence Dinner and the perfect compliment to her simple yet elegant gown was a simple yet elegant hairstyle. Her hairstylist, Brian Magallones, below dishes on exactly how he tended her sleek and chic locks for the affair, using products from amika and KMS California Hair Care in a step-by-step you can replicate yourself!
|Kate Mara’s hair and makeup were flawless at the recent White House Correspondence Dinner.|
Step 1: Brian first started off curling Kate’s hair with the amika 25mm Tourmaline Curler ($110, www.loveamika.com). A great tip when doing any up-do is to always curl the hair first. Having a curl in the hair helps to get the finished look as clean as possible. If the hair is straight then there will be too many fly-aways and the end result can look very static.
Step 2: The next step was to pull her hair into a sleek pony tail at the nape of the neck. He gave her a deep side part, and made the part at an angle to give it a bit of asymmetry. He then rubbed a bit of KMS California HAIRPLAY gel wax ($17.99, salons nationwide) in his palms and smoothed it over her hair as he brushed her hair back into a low pony tail. He then secured it at the nape of her neck, being sure to get it as sleek as possible.
Step 3: Brian then took a one inch section of hair from the bottom of the pony tail and created a single braid.
Step 4: He then twisted the remaining hair up and around into a bun, securing with hairpins along the way, while leaving the braid hanging out.
Step 5: Once the bun was secure, he took the braid and wrapped it around the bun, securing with hairpins. The braid is always a nice way to add texture, and take a simple bun to the next level.
Step 6: Finally he secured the whole look with KMS California HAIRSTAY maximum hold spray ($16.99, salons nationwide), and then a light shine mist, to keep her looking sleek and chic all night long.
